Panopto Video Capture

Panopto is an integrated video capture tool that allows users to create, edit and share videos in Sakai courses and beyond. There are two ways you can manage your course videos.

Built-in Sakai Panopto Folder

Personal Panopto Folder

Use the Panopto Folder built into your Sakai site. Turn on the “Panopto” tool in Site Info -> Manage Tools and access Panopto through the Sakai left-hand navigation. Manage video through the course; a term-specific Panopto folder is created automatically. Access Panopto directly and go to your personal “My Folder” in Panopto. Create a subfolder for your course(s). Use that folder to manage video across semesters. Embed your videos manually in Sakai as needed.
Why To Use (Advantages):
  • Easiest way to quickly share video with students in Sakai
  • If your content is mainly new each semester, start with a blank slate each time
  • Older content stays in previous Sakai site for archive, if needed
  • Other instructors and TAs in Sakai site can automatically access and manage videos
  • Can map Zoom cloud recordings for course into that course folder; Zoom class recordings automatically appear in Sakai
  • Creates a more permanent single place to manage and share video across terms
  • If you re-use video each term, do not have to copy videos into each new Sakai site Panopto folder
  • If you embed your video in Lessons using the shopping cart option, no need to redo anything each semester
  • Have easier control over what students see – only give access to exact videos you choose
Disadvantages:
  • If you re-use video each semester, must copy old videos into new site each semester
  • Older content can be harder to find/re-use
  • If you embed video in Lessons using the shopping cart option, videos stay connected to older course folders
  • Must manually share videos with students in your Sakai site; not immediately available via Panopto button
  • Must manually give other instructors and TAs who to need to manage videos “creator” access to your course folder
What to do each semester:
  1. Go into Sakai and turn on the Panopto button in Site Info -> Manage Tools
  2. If you are re-using video from the previous semester, copy that video into the new Sakai Panopto folder
  3. If you embed video in the Lessons tool using the shopping cart option, update those embeds to point to video copies in current Sakai Panopto folder
  1. Give any new TAs and/or instructors who need to manage video in your folder “creator” access
  2. Optional: Any videos you will NOT be re-using, consider moving to an archive folder
Consider A Blended Approach:
  • Use the Sakai Panopto folder for term-specific videos, like class recordings, that you will NOT reuse each semester, OR do not individually embed in Lessons
  • Use a permanent course subfolder under your Panopto “My Folder” for any video content you re-use each semester OR typically only embed in Lessons, like pre-recorded lectures

Help Students Enable their Panopto Account

In order to be able to see the videos, your students have to click the Panopto tool in your course (just one time, not for each video). That creates their account and gives them access to the videos in that course. So perhaps that would be a good task for the first day of class. We recommend adding the text below on your Week 1 page or your first Lesson page that has a video. You can also add a short version to the Checklist on the same page.

*In order to activate your Panopto account and make your course lectures visible, please click the Panopto button in the bottom of the left sidebar. This creates and activates your Panopto account so you can see the videos. You only have to do this once in the course. If you have any trouble, please email at@antioch.edu.

Turning on Panopto in Sakai

Panopto is now available in all Sakai courses. If you do not see it in your sidebar:

  1. Go to Site Info and select Manage Tools
  2. Scroll to the bottom and open up the External Tools Sections
  3. Check Panopto
  4. Click Continue
  5. Click Finish
  6. Panopto will appear in the bottom of your sidebar. You can use Site Info --> Too Order to move it on your sidebar.
  7. Student will need to click the Panopto tool once in your course to gain access to the Panopto videos in your course. After that they can play any Panopto video you embed on a Lesson page.

One way to Embed a Panopto Video in your Sakai Course

  1. Go to your Sakai Site
  2. Open Panopto
  3. Click the "Share" button next to the correct video
  4. If your video is in you "My Folder"... under "Who can access this video" CHANGE it to Anyone at your org who has the link
  5. Click the purple "Embed<>" button and click the Copy Embed Code button
  6. Go to the place on the Lesson page you want to Add it and click the PLUS sign to Add Text
  7. Click the Source button on the TextEditor Toolbar and Ctrl+V Paste in the embed code. (For a smaller video change the height to 350 and the width to 500 in the code.)
  8. Click the Save button
  9. To link to the Slides, click the PLUS sign and select Add Content Link
  10. Upload your Slides PDF or PPT and click Save

Panopto Support

If you have questions about using Panopto, you can contact at@antioch.edu with questions. The Panopto Support Website is also very useful! They offer:

  • Documentation
  • Video Tutorials
  • User Forums
  • Training Calendar and
  • Launch Kit

You will need to create a Support login the first time. We recommend using the exact same email address and password you use for Panopto so there is no confusion.
