Course Development: Responsibilities for Planning & Implementing Technology in Courses
The academic unit head, faculty member, and instructional designer all have important roles in effective course development and implementation. Communication among the people in these roles is key to successful course delivery and student learning. Active leadership is required to allocate appropriate time and resources for course development. Well-prepared faculty result in effective learning experiences for students. Engaged instructional designers provide instructional support, coaching, and feedback that leads to instructional quality.
The charts below articulate various aspects involved in course planning, development, approval, delivery, assessment, and revision. “X” marks indicate areas of primary responsibility. “Support” indicates specific areas where instructional designers have responsibility to coach and assist.
While these charts describe the ways that faculty, instructional designer and academic unit head all contribute to quality instructional design, program and course development must always follow existing campus/program processes and procedures. The purpose of articulating responsibilities in this way is to foster, rather than hinder, creative instructional design:
