The Process of Working with an Instructional Designer
The overall process for us building an online course together is we start by figuring out the overall delivery method for the course and we talk or email to be sure I understand goals for the course beyond the official learning objectives (reducing travel time, increasing peer-to-peer interactions, etc...). Faculty then gather all their materials, organized by week or lesson, in a Google doc. Once those are done, I build out the site based on those materials and the understanding of the intended interactions.
Usually it makes sense to think through the larger methods and interaction goals for the course before deciding what the format will be for those individual lessons. For instance, do you want to have all of the personal engagement be asynchronous (with students using activities like discussion forums and/or peer reviews for their interactions) or do you want to have synchronous discussions/activities using Zoom? Are there any other outside tools or services you want to bring into the Sakai space?
The standard materials you should prepare for a course with online sessions:
- Getting Started information
- Syllabus
- Overview/rhythm of the course
- Communication guidelines/expectations
- Rubrics
- How to get support if needed for any thing needed to complete SLOs
- etc
- For each Week/Lesson
- Overview
- Student Learning Outcomes
- Checklist of things to be completed
- Required and Recommended Readings/Viewings/Resources
- Required and Recommended Activities
- Times for any live meetings
